The Tenerife Cabildo’s government council has approved the forced expropriation of the former Mesón Teide building located in El Portillo, La Orotava. The intention is to transform the property into a multi-use centre for managing the Teide National Park.

Currently abandoned, the building spans 828 square metres and is situated alongside the TF-21 road, a primary access route to the park. Once refurbished, it will provide permanent facilities for technical staff, environmental agents, and firefighting teams, enhancing emergency coordination.

This initiative, led by the Department of Natural Resources, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, aims to upgrade the park’s management infrastructure, in line with the growing human resources dedicated to the protected area.

Cabildo President Rosa Dávila emphasised the need for suitable installations to effectively manage such a critical natural space. She noted that the Mesón Teide’s location and size make it ideal for becoming a coordination hub for park services.

The renovated site will consolidate various services currently spread across smaller, inadequate facilities. A report from the Teide National Park office highlights the need for a multifunctional space to include administrative and operational areas.

Future uses will involve spaces for daily park management staff, environmental agents, meeting rooms, and fire brigade facilities, along with emergency coordination areas.

Located at number 24 on the TF-21 road, the building consists of four levels. The overall site, including access and parking, totals approximately 902 square metres. This strategic location allows quick access to various parts of the park, facilitating transport and response to incidents.

The property has been valued at €731,028, based on a detailed assessment. The expropriation will cover the main building and adjacent access areas not formally included in property records.

This move is part of the broader reorganisation of resources dedicated to managing Teide National Park, following a shift of responsibilities from the Canary Islands Autonomous Community to the Cabildo in December 2025.

The approved agreement includes a 20-day public information period, where affected parties can submit objections. The expropriation process is based on the public utility declaration linked to the park’s protection and management plan.

It is important to note that the commencement of this procedure does not yet indicate immediate acquisition, as it will depend on the expropriation process and valuation determination. The aim is to complete the procedure before the end of 2026.
