Lanzarote’s Cabildo has announced that the solemn Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, originally set for Tuesday, September 15, at 11:00 AM in Mancha Blanca, has been postponed to 6:00 PM. This change comes in response to a maximum alert for high temperatures issued by the Canary Islands Government’s Emergency Directorate.
The new time was decided in collaboration with the Diocese of the Canary Islands to protect the public from exposure to extreme heat during peak hours.
In line with the heat alert, the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Security and Emergency Consortium has advised local councils to cancel outdoor activities, including sports, cultural events, and leisure, between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM starting Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to soar to 37 degrees Celsius in inland areas and southern slopes of the islands. A gradual decrease in temperatures is forecast for Wednesday, but high values will still persist across various locations.
The Consortium will maintain these recommendations until the Emergency Directorate lowers the current alert. Citizens are urged to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly and children. Recommendations include avoiding direct sun exposure, staying in cool places as much as possible, limiting physical activity during peak heat hours, wearing light clothing, and staying hydrated. It is also critical not to leave children, the elderly, or pets inside closed vehicles.
If symptoms like nausea, dizziness, headaches, or excessive sweating occur, individuals should cease activities, cool down, rest in a shaded area, and hydrate. If symptoms persist or heatstroke is suspected, emergency medical assistance should be sought by calling 112.
Additionally, the heat alert necessitates changes to the final day of the 37th Lanzarote Craft Fair, which will now be open from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Mancha Blanca fairgrounds.
The programme kicks off at 6:00 PM with a performance by Parranda Janubio followed by demonstrations of traditional games. Families can engage in workshops aimed at crafting using local techniques, with various artisans leading activities.
The craft fair will also feature a musical performance entitled “Ecos de mujer” by Acatife, scheduled for 7:30 PM.
The Cabildo advises the public to be aware of the revised timings for Tuesday and to adhere closely to the safety and emergency instructions issued.
