Heat and Dust Alert for the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands Government has issued a pre-alert for high temperatures and dust clouds affecting all islands from 00:00 on Monday, September 14.
The alert for high temperatures comes as forecasts indicate maximums reaching up to 37°C in Fuerteventura and 36°C in Lanzarote. Inland areas will feel the heat first, with coastal regions in the south and southeast expected to experience similar temperatures by Tuesday. Gran Canaria is also set to see temperatures around 34°C in the south and west, potentially hitting 37°C in some areas on Tuesday. Tenerife will reach highs of 35°C in its southern midlands on Tuesday, while La Gomera and La Palma are expected to see temperatures of 34-35°C and 30-32°C, respectively.
The Government’s Emergency Directorate has taken these actions based on advice from the State Meteorological Agency, in accordance with the Canary Islands’ specific emergency plan for adverse weather events.
Furthermore, the atmospheric dust is predicted to impact air quality adversely, particularly in low-lying areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where concentrations may exceed 100 mg/m³ from Monday morning. Other islands could experience similar issues with air quality being classified as poor to very poor in several areas, especially Gran Canaria and La Palma.
Residents, especially those with chronic respiratory conditions, are advised to remain vigilant and follow guidance from emergency services.
