Tenerife’s Council has approved a new round of grants for families with children aged 0 to 3 attending early years centres, with an initial budget of €1.35 million. This figure could increase to €2 million for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Each grant will provide €800 per child, aimed at families whose children are enrolled in authorised centres and do not occupy publicly funded places.
Council President, Rosa Dávila, highlighted this initiative as part of their commitment to support families during a crucial time both educationally and financially. She emphasised that investing in early years education helps families manage work-life balance, ensuring that the costs of education do not become a barrier.
Dávila pointed out the significant budgetary effort made by the council, with hopes to assist over 6,000 families during this term. To date, more than 3,000 households have benefitted from the ‘Cheque Guardería’, with a total of €5.8 million allocated since the programme’s inception.
Efraín Medina, the Councillor for Employment, Education, and Youth, explained that the grants address a genuine need for many Tenerife families, easing the financial burden of early years schooling. The funding can be used for expenses such as registration, tuition, childcare, hygiene, meals, and school uniforms.
Eligibility for these grants includes children enrolled in approved early years centres who do not occupy publicly funded places, with family income per person not exceeding €20,000 for 2025. Applications will open on the first business day after the official announcement of the grant details and will close on 30 October 2026.
Applications can be submitted online via the council’s electronic platform or in person at Citizen Attention Offices, with educational centres assisting families with the process and providing necessary information.
The new guidelines state that these grants cannot be combined with other assistance for the same purpose but can coexist with reductions for municipal nursery fees. The adjustments reflect feedback from early years centres and lessons learned from previous grant rounds. The final regulations will be published on 15 September 2026.
