Tinajo Celebrates Launch of Los Dolores 2026 Festivities with Tribute to Healthcare Workers
Tinajo has officially kicked off its major festival season with the Los Dolores 2026 announcement, held on Wednesday in Mancha Blanca. This event is one of the island’s most cherished celebrations, renowned for its community spirit.
This year’s opening ceremony paid tribute to the dedicated staff of Lanzarote’s Health Services.
Dr. María Teresa Godoy Suárez, director of Tinajo Health Centre, was the highlight of the evening, delivering the much-anticipated proclamation on behalf of the island’s medical professionals. In her heartfelt speech, she reflected on the challenging history of healthcare on the island.
“Talking about our island’s healthcare means talking about generations who fought to survive in such a beautiful yet demanding land,” Dr. Godoy stated. She recalled the resilience of the Lanzarote community as they faced epidemics, droughts, and historic famines, ultimately reaching the healthcare system in place today.
Dr. Godoy also recognised the contributions of all healthcare roles, from doctors to nurses and midwives, emphasising the need for compassionate care in an increasingly technological field. “Medicine will only be truly excellent when it marries the best technology with the best humanity. Before patients, there are people; before diseases, there are life stories,” she added.
Local authorities joined in the heartfelt tribute. Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo, highlighted how the choice to honour healthcare workers aligns with the spirit of the celebrations. “Lanzarote’s history is rooted in overcoming adversity, and a strong island protects its people,” he said.
Tinajo’s mayor, Jesús Machín, remarked that this proclamation would be remembered in the community’s history, expressing gratitude for the commitment and dedication of healthcare workers. “Behind every consultation and duty, there are individuals who dedicate their lives to caring for others,” he noted.
María Jesús Tovar, the island’s vice-president, invited residents to revel in the Mancha Blanca festivities, urging everyone to embrace this time of identity, culture, and tradition while prioritising community wellbeing.
