The San Bartolomé Town Council is moving forward with plans to resurface a section of Calderetas Street, between Rubicón and Garduña, in a bid to improve safety and functionality. The project comes with a budget of €85,990.45.
Before the roadworks commence, the council has requested the replacement of the water supply pipe running through the area. This request stems from ongoing issues with leaks and frequent pipe failures, which the local authority deems critical to address before any asphalt work is done.
Mayor Isidro Pérez has emphasised the importance of this replacement, stating, “Calderetas is one of the streets with the highest leak rates, and renewing the road only to have to dig it up later for repairs wouldn’t make sense.” He acknowledged that this request has delayed the asphalt works but described it as a responsible decision that aims for long-term solutions.
The council believes it is essential to replace the pipe before starting the resurfacing to prevent any future excavations on freshly renovated roads in case of pipe breaks. The pavement work will involve milling five centimetres from the existing surface, followed by a new layer of asphalt of the same thickness.
Urban Planning Councillor Marlene Romero highlighted that the intervention aims to comprehensively enhance the street’s conditions while coordinating with utility networks to avoid further disturbances once the job is completed.
Public Works Councillor Raúl de León reiterated the need for a permanent fix for the water supply issues, insisting that this must happen before any asphalt work.
The resurfacing project includes complete milling of the designated section, preparing the surface, adding an adhesion layer, and adjusting manhole covers and grates to fit the new road level. The work is expected to take about three weeks, involving an average of ten workers throughout.
With an estimated material execution budget of €67,533.54 and a total contract value of €80,364.91, the project aims to comprehensively improve the area while ensuring proper coordination between the pipe replacement and the resurfacing efforts. Mayor Pérez concluded, “The goal is not just to resurface the street but to first address the pipe issues, ensuring the longevity of the solution.”
