Cabildo to Improve Safety on TF-5 between Icod and El Tanque
The Cabildo de Tenerife is undertaking rehabilitation work on approximately 11 kilometres of the TF-5 road, spanning from Icod de los Vinos to El Tanque. This will involve renewing around 60,000 square metres of the road surface.
Dámaso Arteaga, the Cabildo’s Roads Counsellor, stated that the initiative aims to enhance safety and extend the lifespan of the roads. The first phase includes repairing and smoothing the surface, followed by applying a five-millimetre layer of cold micro-asphalt.
Arteaga acknowledged that while the work may cause disruption, it is essential for ensuring road safety in the coming years.
The project has been structured in phases due to technical requirements. Nighttime work began on 30 August, and daytime closures are now also in effect to facilitate the application of the micro-asphalt. The materials used require specific environmental conditions for optimal results.
The rehabilitation work and application of the new micro-layer are expected to last about two weeks, subject to progress and necessary conditions for completion.
To ensure traffic flow during this period, diversions are in place. Vehicles will primarily be redirected via the TF-42 and TF-82 roads. The Cabildo advises drivers to plan their routes accordingly and adhere to signage in the area.
Arteaga indicated that this work is part of a strategy to progressively improve road conditions in the region. He noted previous work on the central section of El Tanque, with additional larger projects currently being processed that will affect the road between Icod and Santiago del Teide. These larger projects, which will also involve road rehabilitation, are expected to commence by the end of this year or early next year.
Recognising the importance of this road for island communications, Arteaga emphasised the aim to continuously enhance its condition.
