Valdepeñas is gearing up for its 73rd Wine and Harvest Festival, taking place from 1st to 8th September. The event showcases over 150 activities, blending culture, music, gastronomy, and winemaking traditions.
With the grape harvest upon us, this popular event highlights the town’s rich historical and cultural connection to viticulture. The comprehensive programme includes concerts, cultural and sporting pursuits, competitions, and wine-related experiences.
Throughout the festival, Valdepeñas’ streets and squares will become vibrant meeting places for locals and visitors alike. Wine plays a central role, featuring tasting events, competitions, and wine tourism activities that emphasise the importance of winemaking in the area, renowned as the “City of Wine.”
Prior to the festival, the 25th Wine Tunnel, organised by the Young Friends of Wine Association with the council, opened on 26th August. This event is complemented by the third National Wine Tasting Competition, held at the Wine Museum, as the festival aims to blend popular celebration with wine culture.
The festival’s activities extend beyond wine tasting. Family-friendly events, sports, music, contests, and cultural gatherings cater to audiences of all ages. Local groups enhance the festive atmosphere, making community engagement a key aspect of the celebration.
The festival is also a significant tourist draw, recognised as a National Tourist Interest event. This accolade highlights Valdepeñas’ longstanding tradition that showcases the region’s winemaking culture every September.
This year’s celebrations mark two notable anniversaries: the centenary of the Plaza de España fountain, inaugurated in 1926, and three decades of Valdepeñas’ partnership with the French city of Cognac, both tied by their strong wine and spirits cultures.
