Yoné Caraballo, the candidate for Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) for the presidency of Lanzarote’s Cabildo, has accused the Canary Islands Government, led by the Coalición Canaria (CC), of failing local families amid rising living costs.
Caraballo highlighted that inflation reached 4.3% in August, the highest since February 2023, exacerbated by climbing fuel prices. He expressed frustration that while residents grapple with increasing grocery and fuel expenses, the government remains inactive.
He pointed out that Lanzarote has not received the special fuel discount of 20 cents per litre available in La Gomera or 15 cents in El Hierro and La Palma. “There shouldn’t be a divide among Canarians based on where they live. Lanzarote faces similar transport costs and has families struggling to make ends meet,” he stated.
Caraballo also condemned the government’s broader inaction regarding rising costs of living, asserting that promises made by the current president, Fernando Clavijo, to ease financial pressures have not materialised. He accused the government of prioritising tax cuts for the wealthiest while ignoring the needs of the majority.
He stressed the urgent need for Lanzarote to have a strong political voice to defend its residents. “We cannot accept that as tourism pressures mount, locals have to pay more for basic needs. Regaining Lanzarote means ensuring families can live affordably on their home island,” he concluded.
