Activists from the Salta a la Transición Ecológica platform have reported attempts to disrupt a digital petition against a gas plant proposed by Disa in Los Realejos, northern Tenerife. Initially intended for La Zamora, the plant is now planned closer to residences in the La Cruz Santa district, facing opposition from the local government and other council groups.
The platform stated that their petitioning effort has been hindered, with someone reportedly pausing the digital collection by flagging it to Google, although the reasons for this remain unclear as all data protection policies were followed.
In response, local residents intensified their paper petition efforts across the municipality, and reported strong opposition against the propane plant near homes.
The activists emphasise that the Canary Islands government has the power to prevent what they describe as a harmful and polluting infrastructure by withholding the necessary permits. They are determined to continue their signature collection campaign and have vowed to fight against the plant’s establishment, similar to their response when a similar plan arose in La Zamora.
Meanwhile, Los Realejos’ Mayor Adolfo González (PP) has stated that the gas plant is unsuitable for the industrial area of La Gañanía due to its proximity to residential areas. He plans to communicate this stance to both the Canarian government and the Ministry for Ecological Transition after discussing the issue with council members.
In their response to residents’ concerns, Disa has defended the legality of the plant, arguing that it is necessary to mitigate risks of energy blackouts, a position echoed by the regional Ministry for Ecological Transition led by Mariano Hernández Zapata (PP).
