Major Upgrade for La Laguna Transport Interchange Set for November 2026
The comprehensive renovation of La Laguna transport interchange in Tenerife will commence in November 2026, as confirmed by the Cabildo de Tenerife. The project, managed by Titsa, has been awarded to a consortium of Cobra Infraestructuras Hidráulicas and Imesapi, which secured the contract over eight other bidders, with a budget exceeding eight million euros.
Pending any objections in the next 15 business days, the contract will be formalised, and the work is expected to be completed within 20 months, by July 2028. The upgrades will enhance waiting areas, renew bus bays, and install glass enclosures to protect passengers from the weather.
Additionally, the project will introduce new vertical access points through elevators and stairs, alongside a hearing accessibility system based on artificial intelligence. Other improvements include pavement rehabilitation, structural enhancements, and upgraded lighting and drainage systems. The building’s façade will be entirely refurbished using more efficient and durable materials, establishing a direct connection with the Padre Anchieta Pedestrian Bridge. The warranty for the work will also be extended by three years.
In the meantime, a temporary station will be set up to maintain services for nearly 25,000 daily users while renovations are underway. The Cabildo states that this station will facilitate 100% of public transport services during the works. It will feature bus stops distributed across two areas: 17 of the planned 30 bays on Avenida Ángel Guimerá and the remaining 13 at a section of the Central Campus of the University of La Laguna.
Rosa Dávila, Cabildo president, emphasised the need for infrastructure to evolve alongside the growth of public transport, ensuring a modern fleet and facilities. Eulalia García, the council’s mobility advisor, noted that the renovation aims to improve user comfort while facing the challenge of maintaining service during the project.
In support of the public transport system, two bus stops connecting the TF-5 with La Matanza will also be upgraded, with an investment of 185,000 euros to renew these points, which handle 384 movements daily.
Separately, the island’s government approved an investment of over three million euros for emergency repairs to Anaga’s roads, particularly affected by storm Therese. These works will restore slopes and drainage systems compromised by the storm and reinforce them against future weather events.
Given Anaga’s challenging topography, these preventative measures are crucial for safeguarding against landslips and drainage failures during heavy rainfall. Finally, a new agreement has been established with Mercatenerife to ensure a steady supply of fresh food products during emergencies.
