The Canary Islands Health Ministry has invested over €10 million to upgrade health centres and local clinics in Tenerife since June 2023. Key improvements include the opening of five new clinics, notably the one in Las Chafiras, costing €2.2 million, and new facilities in El Sauzal and Buenavista del Norte, with investments of €986,676 and €2.2 million, respectively.
The Local Clinic of Barroso in La Orotava also started operating in May after a €1.3 million investment. These new facilities enhance healthcare for the local population, improving access to services and adding new features, including extraction rooms in Las Chafiras, El Sauzal, and Barroso-Colombo. Additionally, two new resuscitation and observation rooms were created at the San José de los Llanos clinic, reducing the need for patients to travel to other healthcare centres.
The construction of the Local Clinic of La Esperanza in El Rosario has also been completed, with an investment of €2,301,969. Final preparations for its opening are underway, including the installation of communication systems and furniture. This new clinic aims to meet the long-standing healthcare needs of residents, enhancing services for both patients and staff.
In El Tanque, improvements at the San José de los Llanos clinic have been completed for €51,000. There has also been an investment of nearly €3 million for maintenance, climate control, and renovations of various primary care centres on the island. New sample extraction points have been established in the La Laguna–Universidad Basic Health Zone and at the Local Clinic of El Sauzal.
In terms of future projects, work is progressing on the expansion and renovation of the Tacoronte Health Centre, with a recent approval of €6,856,996 from the Government Council. This funding will revive a stalled expansion project from the previous legislature for the centre, which is over 30 years old.
Plans for a new Peripheral Clinic in Fasnia are underway, with project drafting expected to begin this year on land provided by the local council. Additionally, the land for a new local clinic in Tegueste has been acquired by the council for eventual transfer to the Health Service.
