Tenerife Hosts International Basketball Tournament from August 21-23
Tenerife will host an international basketball tournament from August 21 to 23 at the Pabellón Santiago Martín, featuring matches between Spain, Nigeria, and Belgium. The event was announced today by Lope Afonso, Vice President of the Cabildo and Tourism Counselor, alongside Elisa Aguilar, President of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), and national coach Miguel Méndez.
This tournament marks a key part of the Spanish women’s team’s preparations for the World Cup in Germany from September 4 to 13. Afonso emphasized the strategic alliance between Tenerife and the FEB, highlighting that high-level sports promotion can significantly boost tourism. He expressed pride in hosting such a prestigious event, confirming that Tenerife has the facilities and support to stage international sports tournaments.
Elisa Aguilar praised Tenerife for its support, recalling the island’s role in the team’s success during the 2018 World Cup, where they won bronze. She asserted that the support of local fans during that tournament was instrumental and expressed confidence that Tenerife would again be a lucky charm for the team.
Yolanda Moliné, the island’s Sports Councillor, reiterated the importance of the relationship between Tenerife and the FEB, urging locals to fill the Santiago Martín arena and boost the team’s morale. This sentiment was echoed by Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo Tenerife, who highlighted the positive impact of sporting events in promoting the island on the international stage.
With this tournament, Tenerife reaffirms its position as a prime location for international women’s basketball and a vibrant, welcoming destination for visitors and sports fans alike.
