Lanzarote’s local government is enhancing the facilities at the Tinajo Senior Residence to ensure optimal living conditions for its users. The Cabildo has allocated €40,000 to replace the old wooden skylight with a new aluminium structure and translucent materials. This upgrade is aimed at improving lighting, ventilation, and overall comfort.

Additionally, ten out of the fourteen rooms in the residence have undergone rehabilitation, designed to enhance accessibility for elderly residents.

Oswaldo Betancor, President of the Cabildo, emphasised the institution’s commitment to providing dignified and comfortable facilities for the island’s seniors. He stated, “We are working to ensure our older adults enjoy dignified, accessible, and comfortable facilities. The Tinajo Residence is special, and we want it to remain a benchmark for quality care.”

Marci Acuña, the council member for Social Welfare and Inclusion, recently visited the site with Tinajo’s mayor, Jesús Machín. He highlighted the significance of the completed work, noting that the improvements directly affect the daily lives of residents by making their environment safer and more accommodating.

Acuña also revealed that these renovations are part of a broader initiative to enhance the centre, stating, “We’re drafting a new comprehensive reform project to address the identified deficiencies and provide a lasting solution.”

The Tinajo Senior Residence, built in the 1990s, currently offers 28 residential places and 15 day-care slots. With its small-scale, community-integrated design, it aligns with European models that focus on more humane care tailored to the needs of the elderly.

Mayor Machín praised the improvements made and the collaboration between the council and the Cabildo, describing the residence as a vital resource for both the municipality and the island. He stressed the importance of continued investment to meet the needs of its users.

Acuña confirmed that the Cabildo is now redrafting plans for necessary upgrades, following the abandonment of previous rehabilitation works by the contracted company. “We want to move forward responsibly, with a future-oriented vision,” he concluded, underscoring that any new intervention should significantly enhance the facilities and well-being of the residents.
