Fuerteventura’s Environmental Programme Engages Over 2,100 Participants
Fuerteventura’s ‘Know to Protect’ environmental education programme has seen significant participation, with 69 activities held from June to early August, attracting over 2,100 attendees. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the island’s natural values and promote responsible conservation attitudes among the local community.
Carlos Rodríguez, the Environment Councillor, praised the programme’s success, describing it as vital for enhancing knowledge and respect for Fuerteventura’s natural heritage. He noted a recent contract that will allow for the expansion and improvement of activities in the coming years.
The programme reached participants of all ages and backgrounds across the island, including school pupils and various social groups. Activities focused on waste reduction, recycling, coastal conservation, wildlife recovery, and understanding the island’s biodiversity.
Among the most popular projects were ‘Think 3R and Act’ and ‘Coast in Sight,’ which engaged many community members. Other initiatives, like ‘Back to Home,’ emphasized wildlife conservation, particularly for sea turtles, and included guided tours at La Oliva Biological Station.
With this strong participation, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura reaffirms its commitment to environmental education as a crucial tool for fostering responsible habits and enhancing community involvement in natural heritage conservation.
