Fuerteventura Teams Advance to NeuroCanarias After Neuromajo Finals
Nearly 300 older participants from six municipalities took part in Fuerteventura’s Neuromajo season, featuring physical and cognitive challenges aimed at promoting active aging and social interaction.
On Sunday, at the Playitas Sports Resort in Tuineje, three teams qualified for the regional competition, NeuroCanarias: Amigos de Pájara topped the local standings, followed by Camellito from Tuineje and Las Apañás from Puerto del Rosario in second and third place, respectively.
The three teams will represent Fuerteventura at NeuroCanarias, taking place from 20 to 22 November in Pájara, where the top teams from the Canary Islands will compete.
The weekend’s final event marked the culmination of a series of activities that included relays and various games, bringing together nearly 300 seniors from across the island. This season featured 18 teams, including participants from municipalities like Antigua, Betancuria, and La Oliva.
The main competition was preceded by a parade in Caleta de Fuste on 16 October, with qualifying rounds held the following day.
Neuromajo blends physical activity with cognitive stimulation, enhancing skills such as coordination, memory, and mental agility through adapted games. This year, a separate letter race was also held in early October across the island.
Beyond competition, Neuromajo aims to foster an active lifestyle among seniors and promote community connections. Amigos de Pájara, the previous regional runners-up, will aim for victory at the upcoming NeuroCanarias.
Awards were presented by Fuerteventura’s Council President Lola García, along with local mayors and community leaders. Neuromajo is supported by the island’s Social Action council and includes partnerships with local businesses.
The season will conclude with the Neuromajo Gala on 6 February 2027, recognising achievements throughout the year.
