Canary Islands Weather Update: Heatwave Eases, But Temperatures Remain High
Weather conditions in the Canary Islands are set to improve this Monday after days of extreme heat, with the regional government lifting its high-temperature alert. Nonetheless, some areas are still expected to see maximum temperatures between 30°C and 32°C, particularly in mid-altitude regions on the southern and western sides of several islands.
According to the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and the Canary Islands Government’s Directorate-General for Emergencies, northern regions will experience cloudy skies, and strong gusts of wind could affect exposed locations.
This Monday marks a significant change, as the Canary Islands Government has rescinded the heat alert that had been in effect since 8:00 am for El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, southern Tenerife, and elevations above 400 metres in Gran Canaria.
Despite the higher temperatures easing, authorities will maintain a pre-alert for the risk of forest fires throughout the Canary Islands.
Trade Winds Bring Change
The lifting of the heat alert coincides with a retreat of the hot air mass that has affected the archipelago. The north-easterly trade winds are expected to bring cooler conditions to directly exposed slopes, although inland areas and southern, eastern, and western slopes will likely remain warm.
Temperatures are forecast to decrease slightly inland, but some mid-altitude areas in southern Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria could still reach between 30°C and 32°C. In Tenerife, some southern and western regions may approach 30°C.
Cloudy Skies and Light Drizzle
Northern parts of the higher islands—Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro—can expect overcast skies below around 1,000 metres, with a chance of light, scattered drizzle, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
In contrast, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are predicted to have clearer skies during midday.
Strong Winds and Rough Seas
Moderate north-easterly winds are anticipated, with occasional strong gusts, particularly on the south-eastern and north-western slopes of mountainous islands, as well as southern Jandía in Fuerteventura and Tenerife’s metropolitan southern coastline.
Sea conditions are expected to remain turbulent in exposed areas, with northerly winds producing moderate to rough seas. The southern and south-western coasts should see lighter winds and calmer sea conditions.
Overall, this Monday signals a gradual shift from the recent heatwave towards more typical summer trade-wind patterns, but temperatures of up to 32°C, strong gusts, and the ongoing threat of forest fires indicate that unsettled weather remains a concern.
