Journalist Faces Trial Following Allegations by Former Judge
Salvador Alba Mesa, a former judge, has pursued legal action against a journalist following his conviction in November 2021 for serious crimes, including prevarication. The journalist, now facing charges of revealing secrets and harassment, received a significant bond of €422,000 after Alba’s allegations were made in June 2022. Alba published a book in May 2023, portraying himself as a victim of a conspiracy.
The Provincial Court of Madrid recently dismissed part of Alba’s claims, but the journalist remains deeply frustrated at having to defend himself simply for reporting on allegations of misconduct. There is currently no scheduled date for the trial in Madrid’s criminal court.
Alba’s campaign against the journalist intensified after his conviction. He has aimed to discredit coverage of his actions, asserting that he is the actual victim of judicial wrongdoing, rather than the judge Victoria Rosell, who he was accused of targeting to gain support from influential figures.
Alba believed that if his actions had stayed away from public scrutiny, there would have been no scandal. His downfall came when a recording of his conduct was leaked to the media, sparking one of Spain’s biggest judicial scandals. Reports detailed his attempts to evade notifications, dubious medical claims to avoid flying, and even socialising with political figures.
The journalist emphasised the necessity of reporting, especially against powerful figures like Alba. Despite some media backing Alba, and a notable instance where a publication, El Mundo, largely accepted his narrative before the recording’s release, the journalist is determined to continue reporting on the subject.
In his book, Alba disparagingly describes the journalist, calling him an amateur using his platform for maligning others. Yet, this portrayal contrasts starkly with the journalist’s commitment to investigating corruption and injustices within the judicial system.
The journalist remains resolute in his mission, asserting his right to report on Alba and his actions, regardless of the consequences, vowing to keep the community informed about developments involving Alba and his associates.
