The Lanzarote and La Graciosa Cabildo has approved a competitive funding scheme to support fishing associations in the region, allocating a total of €280,000. This initiative aims to strengthen the activities of fishermen’s guilds, the Tuna and Fresh Fish Producers Organisation, and various fishing associations by aiding both operational costs and infrastructure improvements.
Of the total funding, €130,000 is earmarked for operational expenses, while €150,000 will be invested in modernising facilities, purchasing machinery, and enhancing equipment to boost the sector’s competitiveness. This funding is in addition to the €400,000 previously set aside by the Cabildo for acquiring fishing boats for the artisanal fleet.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort emphasised that “the fishing sector is a key economic, social, and cultural pillar for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and we continue to implement measures that support its growth and modernisation. These grants provide direct support to the entities representing our professionals and ensure the future of this crucial activity for our islands.”
Fishing Councillor Samuel Martín added that “this funding responds to the sector’s needs, providing resources for day-to-day operations as well as investments to enhance facilities and operational capacity. It includes assessment criteria that take into account fishing activities, catch volume, and the involvement of both young people and women in these organisations.”
The grants will cover expenses related to operations, personnel, materials, software, and investments aimed at improving landing facilities, infrastructure, equipment, and transportation of fish products. Applications will be evaluated based on objective criteria relevant to each entity, ensuring that funding is allocated in a way that reflects the sector’s realities.
Applications can be submitted through the Cabildo’s electronic office for 15 working days following the announcement published in the Official Bulletin of the Province of Las Palmas.
