First “Memories of a White Cricket” Festival in Punta Mujeres, Lanzarote
From August 4 to 8, Punta Mujeres will host the inaugural Memories of a White Cricket Festival, an event blending science, art, and education. Organised by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, the festival aims to raise awareness about the unique brackish ecosystems of Lanzarote.
The festival will feature the emblematic jameíto (Munidopsis polymorpha) as its symbol, highlighting the connection between artistic creation and scientific research.
The launch took place at the Molino del Teleclub in Punta Mujeres, with attendance from Lanzarote’s Youth Councillor, Aroa Revelo, and the Cultural Councillor of Haría, Evelia García. The project coordinator, Cristina Camacho, and scientific advisor, Alejandro Martínez, were also in attendance.
“This initiative aims to engage young people’s curiosity about our natural identity,” said Revelo, emphasising the educational value of the festival in youth leisure activities. The project also seeks to strengthen the community’s relationship with the island’s subterranean environment.
The festival’s agenda starts on August 4 with an exhibition titled Portal Anquialino by Rogelio Herrera and Cristina Camacho. This will be followed by a screening of the documentary Lava Reefs, directed by Rafa Herrero.

August 6: A beach clean-up at La Cantería, where collected waste will be used to create a large collaborative sculpture. Dr Alejandro Martínez will also deliver a talk on biodiversity.

August 7: Workshops on crafting jameíto masks and community sculpture interventions, along with a discussion on the Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago Geopark.

August 8: An interpretative walk showcasing the mural by artist Sabotaje al Montaje, followed by a vibrant parade with drumming and a creative showcase to close the festival.
