Tenerife Implements Level 2 Fire Safety Measures Amid Heatwave
From 8:00 AM on Saturday, August 1, the Tenerife Island Council will elevate fire risk measures to Level 2 due to soaring temperatures reaching up to 38°C.
President Rosa Dávila urges residents to adhere to these instructions and minimise mountain access as a precaution against wildfires, stressing the importance of public safety and environmental preservation. “We are in a period of intense heat that greatly increases the risk of wildfires,” she stated. “We must act responsibly and proactively.”
Under these restrictions, visitors will be barred from recreational areas and camping sites, and motor vehicles will not be allowed on forest tracks. These measures will remain in place until further notice.
Dávila acknowledged the impact of these restrictions on leisure activities but emphasised that public safety is paramount. She expressed gratitude to emergency services and called for utmost caution and cooperation from the community.
Blanca Pérez, the Councillor for Natural Environment, Sustainability, and Emergencies, highlighted that the Level 2 measures are a vital preventive action to protect the territory from potential fire outbreaks during this prolonged heatwave.
Additional restrictions include bans on outdoor fires—including barbecues and gas stoves—and the use of machinery that may create sparks. The use of pyrotechnics in high-risk areas and smoking in public spaces such as recreational zones will also remain prohibited.
The Council is advising people to keep hydrated, wear sunscreen, and seek shade, particularly during peak heat hours from 12:00 to 16:00. Special care is urged for vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
