Fuerteventura Seeks Public Interest Status for Maritime Link

Lola García, President of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, has handed a signed agreement to Ángel Víctor Torres, the Minister for Territorial Policy and Historical Memory. The agreement, endorsed by local institutions, seeks to have the direct maritime connection between Fuerteventura and the Spanish mainland declared a matter of public interest.
This agreement was signed on 20 July by the Cabildo, local councils, and the Chamber of Commerce, following the state’s unilateral suspension of this essential service.
García stressed that despite previous phone conversations about the issue, she wanted to address the minister in person to highlight the concerns of the local community and institutions. She urged him to engage with the Ministry of Transport and Mobility on their behalf.
“We believe that with political will, the maritime transport framework can be adapted to meet Fuerteventura’s needs,” García added. She noted that the Ministry is currently preparing to draft new tender documents, making it crucial for all parties to act together.
“Given that this matter directly impacts the economy of an island like Fuerteventura, I trust the minister will address it with the appropriate sensitivity,” the president concluded.
Additionally, García announced that the Cabildo’s Plenary will approve an institutional declaration on Friday, requesting the state to declare the direct maritime connection as a Public Service Obligation (PSO) and to restore the service at Puerto del Rosario as part of their collaborative efforts.
