Fuerteventura’s Health Care Expansion: Dunas de Corralejo II Centre Set for 2028 Completion
Mario Cabrera González, a member of the Canary Islands Nationalist Group (CCa), raised concerns in the Canary Parliament about the Dunas de Corralejo II Health Centre in La Oliva, Fuerteventura. He emphasised the need for this vital facility to address the healthcare challenges posed by the island’s significant population growth over recent decades.
Cabrera welcomed Health Minister Esther Monzón’s response, which indicated that, barring any setbacks, construction of the new health centre is expected to finish in the first half of 2028.
He highlighted that Fuerteventura has not only seen a rising resident population but also an influx of visitors year-round, straining public services, particularly healthcare. Cabrera noted that essential infrastructure has not kept pace with this growth, but praised efforts in the current legislative period to adapt the island’s healthcare map to meet existing demands. He cited developments like the establishment of the La Lajita Specialized Care Centre as a forward-looking initiative.
On a more critical note, Cabrera expressed disappointment that previous efforts did not address the island’s key health needs, leaving many historical issues unresolved while demand continued to rise.
He pointed out that the Canary Government is now investing to strengthen Fuerteventura’s healthcare network, which had stalled during the four-year “Pacto de las Flores.” Key improvements include a medical helicopter service and enhancements to the Morro Jable Health Centre, along with upgrades to local clinics in El Matorral, El Cotillo, and El Castillo.
Cabrera concluded that the Dunas de Corralejo II Health Centre represents more than just a new healthcare facility; it is a crucial response to Fuerteventura’s growth, a commitment to quality care, and a testament to the government’s efforts in advancing projects that had long been on hold.
