Vehicle Fire Causes Traffic Disruptions in Las Palmas
A vehicle caught fire early this morning on the Avenida Marítima in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, near the GC-1 heading towards the port. The blaze, which lasted around 30 minutes, sent up a large column of black smoke and partially closed one of the main roads in the city near the Onda Atlántica footbridge.
The driver, who reported the incident, appears to be uninjured, according to the Emergency Coordinating Centre of the Canary Islands (Cecoes 112).
Firefighters arrived approximately 20 minutes after the fire began and extinguished it within 10 minutes. The incident initially shut down two lanes connecting the island to the Port of La Luz and the El Sebadal industrial area. Traffic was redirected through alternate routes, including another access via the port and the Pérez Muñoz tunnel, which leads to La Puntilla and the La Isleta neighbourhood.
By 8:00 AM, local police reopened the left lane, and by 8:13 AM, the vehicle had been removed. Cleaning crews, alongside police officers, worked to restore the area, and normal traffic flow resumed by 8:26 AM.
