The Cabildo de Lanzarote and La Graciosa is advancing the modernisation of key tourist areas by issuing a tender for the design of a Modernisation, Improvement, and Increased Competitiveness Plan for Playa Blanca, along with a third Modernisation Plan for Costa Teguise. This comes after completing the necessary administrative procedures and formalising management agreements with the Canary Islands Government. The total investment for this project is €600,000, and it will be conducted through an open and urgent procurement process.
Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo, stated that this initiative translates months of collaborative effort between the Cabildo and the Canary Islands Government, aimed at providing Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise with planning tools that reflect their current realities. “We are entering a decisive phase. We are no longer discussing administrative steps but starting the drafting of documents that will define the future evolution of both areas. Our aim is to create a robust plan that addresses current challenges,” he noted.
Jesús Machín, the councillor for Territorial Planning, explained that the tender will assemble multidisciplinary teams to develop both plans over the coming months. “We want specialised teams to create two comprehensive plans that address urban, environmental, and economic aspects, improving public spaces, mobility, tourism activities, and urban quality,” he said.
The plans will include all necessary technical, legal, economic, and environmental studies, along with ongoing technical support throughout the administrative process. For Playa Blanca, the initial document will define the scope of action based on the legal and urban status to ensure the viability of future proposals.
The new Modernisation Plans aim to update the management of both tourist centres, encourage the renewal of accommodation and complementary services, enhance public spaces, strengthen infrastructure, promote sustainable mobility, and establish a higher-quality, more competitive tourism model. For Playa Blanca, the new plan will also provide a planning instrument aligned with the current regulations following the partial annulment of the previous planning framework.
