Groundbreaking Gathering Celebrates Women in Leadership in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura hosted a historic event on Thursday, bringing together five of the six women who have led the island councils in the Canary Islands. This gathering, organised by Charter 100 Fuerteventura, highlighted the importance of female leadership in transforming public institutions.
Under the banner “Las 5 Fantásticas”, the event took place at the Fuerteventura Congress Palace, set against the stunning backdrop of Puerto del Rosario Bay.
The roundtable featured notable figures: Inés Rojas de León, former president of the Lanzarote council; Guadalupe González Taño, former president of La Palma; Belén Allende Riera, former president of El Hierro; Rosa Dávila Mamely, the current president of Tenerife; and Dolores Alicia García Martínez, president of Fuerteventura. The discussion was led by Nardy Barrios, president of Charter 100 Canarias.
Rather than just recounting history, the meeting allowed attendees to share personal stories, reflections, and insights from their varied political journeys. While some still hold roles in their councils, others have moved on, yet they all share the distinction of being pioneers in their respective islands.
During the dialogue, the leaders stressed the need for more female role models and the pursuit of genuine equality, acknowledging the importance of breaking down barriers to ensure future generations can assume leadership roles naturally.
The atmosphere of the gathering was warm and collegial as attendees reflected on their institutional experiences and the progress of women in Canarian politics over the decades.
Additionally, the event marked the public launch of Charter 100 Fuerteventura, led by Clara Peña, as part of Charter 100 Canarias. The organisation aims to promote real equality between genders, encouraging professional development, entrepreneurship, and female leadership through collaboration and social commitment.
With this inaugural gathering, Charter 100 Fuerteventura embarks on a journey aligned with Charter 100 Canarias, which has been fostering reflection, collaboration, and visibility for female talent since 2015.
The sight of these five historic figures sharing the stage in Fuerteventura represented more than just an institutional meeting. It recognised women who broke barriers when female leadership was rare, underscoring that women’s presence in top decision-making roles is not a fleeting phenomenon but a solid reality shaping the future of the Canary Islands.
This first major initiative marks the beginning of Charter 100 Fuerteventura’s commitment to creating role models, fostering female talent, and promoting a more equitable society through dialogue and collaboration.
