Alegre Wins Training Session at Lanzarote 52 Super Series
During the official training day of the Marina Rubicón Lanzarote 52 Super Series Sailing Week, the fleet enjoyed a challenging introduction to the Canary Islands. A north wind ranging from 15 to 25 knots and short, steep waves tested crews as they sought to maximise performance while avoiding damage.
The event featured two planned outings, but only one race was completed. The Turkish boat Provezza, helmed by John Cutler, led for much of the race, but British yacht Alegre, skippered by Andy Soriano, claimed victory after choosing the left side during a downwind leg. Hong Kong’s Alpha Plus and Provezza followed closely behind.
After returning to Marina Rubicón, Alegre’s trimmer, Pablo Arrarte, remarked on the tough conditions: “It was an uncomfortable course with short side waves and gusty winds. We believe choosing the left was key to our success.”
With training complete, attention turns to the five competitive sessions scheduled from Tuesday to Saturday, including up to ten scored races. Local expert Gustavo Martínez Doreste predicts consistent moderate to strong winds, typical of the Canary Islands, driven by the Azores high-pressure system.
The event will feature 11 Spanish sailors aboard six different yachts. Notable participants include Arrarte, tactical expert Manu Weiller on Thai vessel Vayu, and Pablo Torrado on Italian yacht Alkedo Vitamina.
The Lanzarote event marks the third title of the 2026 season. After victories at Puerto Portals and Porto Cervo, Takashi Okura’s Sled leads overall, boasting a 15-point advantage over Germany’s Platoon Aviation.
Races of the 52 Super Series will be live-streamed on official platforms, with a new Spanish-language video channel launching during this event. The first official race begins on Tuesday at 12:00 (local time).
