Tahiche Kicks Off Santiago Apostle and Santa Ana Festivities with Heartfelt Tribute
The Santiago Apostle and Santa Ana festivities in Tahiche officially began on Friday afternoon with a touching ceremony featuring five local elders. They paid tribute to the village’s history, traditions, and identity.
At the Santiago el Mayor Sociocultural Centre, Juan Caraballo, Luciano Pérez, Florencio Duque, Rafaela Morales, and Rafaela Martín served as the honorary speakers for the occasion. Their shared memories brought a wave of emotion to the audience.
A special documentary video showcased their childhood and life experiences in Tahiche, highlighting how the village and its patron celebrations have evolved over the years.
The ceremony opened with Nereyda González, the councillor for the elderly, performing “Un beso y una flor,” setting a nostalgic tone. A recreated welcoming spot from the past tied together the speakers’ heartfelt narratives, honouring the contributions of past generations to the village’s development.
Before the video screening, Nieves Pérez, president of the Santiago el Mayor Neighbourhood Association, and Teguise Mayor Olivia Duque emphasised the importance of preserving the town’s collective memory. Once the video ended, the speakers received recognition from the Neighbourhood Association and Teguise Council for their role in keeping the town’s history alive.
Following the ceremony, the festivities moved to the village square with a parade led by the group Los Cumbacheros, followed by a traditional community meal accompanied by the Alegranza group, fostering a spirit of togetherness and celebration.
The Santiago Apostle and Santa Ana festivities in Tahiche are set to continue for the next few weeks, featuring an array of sports, cultural, musical, religious, and traditional activities. The upcoming highlight will be the Royalty Gala on Saturday evening, a pivotal event in these summer celebrations on Lanzarote.
