The local authorities in Yaiza have begun maintenance work on the dirt paths leading to the beaches of Papagayo and the nearby campsite. These improvements, funded by the municipality, focus on the route from the Los Ajaches Natural Monument’s control point to the Playa Mujeres car park, addressing the damage caused by increased vehicle traffic over the summer months.
Yaiza’s mayor, Óscar Noda, emphasised the shared responsibility for the care of this natural area, stating, “The island council has a role in maintaining the Natural Monument, and we are still awaiting them to take on their duties.”
Nearly a year ago, the council submitted a detailed report outlining the responsibilities of the island council in maintaining Los Ajaches, as specified in the area’s conservation guidelines.
Noda reiterated that Yaiza should not bear the burden of work that isn’t its responsibility and called for the island council to provide the necessary technical and financial resources for the upkeep of Los Ajaches. He highlighted the need for regular maintenance of the dirt paths, signage renewal, and general cleaning.
Yaiza also proposed a technical meeting involving various government departments, the Biosphere Reserve Council, and all political groups within the island council to discuss the conservation strategies for Los Ajaches moving forward.
