The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has welcomed sailor Alfredo González and his crew member Cristian Sánchez after they won the Spanish Championship in the Snipe class, recently held in Vigo.
Oswaldo Betancort, president of the island’s first corporation, and Juan Monzón, councillor for Physical Activity and Sports, congratulated the Lanzarote duo at the Cabildo headquarters, where the sportsmen brought along the trophy from the Galician waters.
Betancort expressed pride in having athletes of this calibre representing Lanzarote and La Graciosa. “Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez are prime examples of talent, discipline, and love for the sea. It’s an immense honour to see two representatives from our islands atop the national podium in such a competitive category, reinforcing our status as a cradle of great sailors and the finest training grounds in the world,” he said.
Juan Monzón noted that this championship reflects years of hard work and dedication. “This title is well-deserved recognition for years of effort and sacrifice on the water. We at the Island Sports Service are committed to supporting local talent and our nautical clubs to ensure Lanzarote continues to shine on both national and international sporting stages,” he stated.
During the meeting, both Betancort and Monzón highlighted the achievements of the crew from the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, who demonstrated their skill against some of the country’s best vessels, solidifying their reputation as a formidable pair in the sport.
