Tenerife Launches New Two-Storey Buses to Boost Public Transport
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 30 June — The first two-storey buses from public transport company Titsa will begin operations in Tenerife on Wednesday. Initially, two buses will be added to lines 110 (Santa Cruz-Costa Adeje) and 112 (Santa Cruz-Los Cristianos), with an additional 11 expected next week. These will serve the southern and northern motorways, including line 108 (Santa Cruz-Icod de los Vinos).
Rosa Dávila, president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, stated that these 13 new buses represent a “remarkable leap” for Titsa, increasing capacity from 59 to 85 seats per trip, a 44% rise. This will provide an additional two million seats annually across the northern and southern motorways.
In 2025, the three lines are anticipated to transport up to six million passengers, a significant increase from the four million carried previously. Dávila highlighted their focus on improving public transport on the island, noting the investment of €125 million towards adding 351 buses since they took office three years ago.
Eulalia García, the mobility councillor, emphasised that these buses were specially designed for Tenerife’s needs, equipped with advanced safety and assistance systems to enhance both passenger safety and driver working conditions. Titsa has achieved its highest passenger numbers in history, with 87 million users recorded in 2025.
The introduction of the two-storey buses is supported by a training programme for bus drivers. So far, 60 out of a planned 90 drivers have completed the training, which ensures the new buses are effectively integrated into the service.
The buses boast modern security features, including blind spot detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, and enhanced visibility through ‘Mirror Cam’ side cameras. They will also be Titsa’s first to implement the Alcolock system, which prevents the vehicle from starting if the driver tests positive for alcohol.
The new buses are part of an extensive fleet renewal initiative by the Cabildo, with 351 new buses introduced in three years and a further 57 due by the end of the year, including five more double-decker buses. Dávila reaffirmed their commitment to promoting public transport usage, reducing road traffic and emissions, as Titsa works to make public transport in Tenerife more attractive and efficient.
