Fuerteventura Windsurf & Wingfoil World Cup Recognised as a Tourist Event
The Fuerteventura Windsurf & Wingfoil World Cup is set to be declared a tourist event of interest, following approval from the Insular Tourism Board. The decision was made during an extraordinary meeting led by Lola García, president of the Cabildo and the Tourism Board, alongside vice-president Marlene Figueroa.
This annual championship is part of the global professional windsurfing circuit and has established Fuerteventura as a premier destination for the sport. In addition to windsurfing, the event now includes wingfoiling, a rapidly growing discipline worldwide.
Gaining the designation of a tourist event allows for greater promotional opportunities from tourism authorities and strengthens its presence in official event calendars. The simultaneous application to the Canary Islands government, the Spanish state, and international bodies maximises its potential recognition.
Lola García highlighted the event as one of the most appealing sporting occasions in the Canary Islands, noting its substantial media reach, which impacts hundreds of millions globally. She emphasised its role in boosting the local economy by supporting small businesses and increasing revenue.
Marlene Figueroa added that the World Cup is more than a sporting competition; it is an established element of the region’s tourism identity, attracting visitors seeking authentic experiences by the sea.
The application will be submitted to the appropriate authorities in the Canary Islands, Spanish government, and relevant international organisations, reinforcing the importance of windsurfing and wingfoiling as key attractions for European travellers.
