Pedro Sánchez’s PSOE is tipped to dominate the upcoming 2027 elections in the Canary Islands, according to political consultant Iván Redondo. Speaking at the launch of his book at Club La Provincia, Redondo cited various polls suggesting the PSOE stands out as the “leading political force.” The party will face competition from the coalition of Coalición Canaria (CC) and Primero Canarias.
Redondo, who served as director of the Cabinet for Sánchez from 2018 to 2020, noted the significance of the PSOE’s position and advocated for a campaign focused on “listening, analysing, and acting,” urging candidates to move past divisive narratives.
He also highlighted the emergence of Primero Canarias, which could challenge the PSOE’s lead, suggesting that the unification of the nationalist factions could present a serious competitor in future elections. “This is unprecedented for many years,” he remarked, referencing the historical split within nationalism.
Looking at the broader electoral landscape, Redondo observed that parties that succeeded in recent elections now face a different political cycle where current governing parties hold an advantage. He described this fragmentation as both a challenge and an opportunity for municipal and regional unity among nationalists.
Redondo mentioned both Fernando Clavijo, the Canary Islands’ president from CC, and the PSOE’s mayor of Las Palmas, asserting they have the chance to build substantial political projects and demonstrate governance success.
As for Sánchez at the national level, Redondo believes he remains “technically unknown” and must evolve from just being “Pedro Sánchez” to becoming a broader national leader. “He needs to connect with a cross-sectional majority across Spain,” he commented, referencing the necessary political outreach and educational efforts.
Looking ahead to the budgeting for 2027, Redondo expressed confidence that Sánchez would succeed in passing these accounts, which could set the stage for general elections following the local ones, with a proposed date of July 18, 2027.
