Fuerteventura’s Push for Improved Living Standards
Fuerteventura’s government is committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents by developing essential infrastructure and services. President Lola García outlined significant achievements during a plenary session on Friday, June 26th, highlighting the successful execution of various initiatives since taking office.
García began by addressing the historic investment of over €60 million aimed at improving the island’s water supply. This enhancement has lifted Fuerteventura from a state of water emergency, bolstering production and storage. “We have made great strides, but there’s still much to do. Our water system is now more robust and prepared for future challenges, including a planned desalination plant in the south,” she stated.
In housing, the island has allocated more than €50 million for the construction of 176 new homes and the refurbishment of 581 existing residences, with several projects already underway.
The government is also focusing on social healthcare by creating essential care facilities. Milestones include the construction of a residential centre in Gran Tarajal and plans to expand mental health services. By 2026, the aim is to increase care capacity to 442 places across various facilities.
Transport infrastructure has received €16 million to enhance over 120 kilometres of roads. Key projects, including the Lajares crossing, are currently in the bidding stage, and collaboration with local authorities has expedited the development of historic road infrastructures.
Public transport has improved as well; 50% of the bus fleet has been renewed. The government has also increased service frequency and added new stops in high-demand areas while maintaining free bus services.
Fuerteventura has emerged as a leader in recycling, particularly in glass collection, thanks to over €40 million invested in waste management and increased public awareness.
Defending the territory remains a priority, with firm opposition to rare earth mining and the introduction of a special territorial plan for energy infrastructure.
García stressed that the government is dedicated to creating equal opportunities for youth, investing over €4 million annually in scholarships, and providing substantial funding for job creation and support for entrepreneurs.
Additionally, the commerce grant programme received €1.2 million. Economic diversification efforts include projects at the Fuerteventura Technology Park and support for the audiovisual sector to facilitate local employment in film productions.
The government is also focused on preserving local identity and traditions, including plans to strengthen the museum network and rehabilitate significant cultural sites.
Sports is another key area, with increased funding for traditional sports federations and new facilities like the Corralejo Athletics Centre. Over €6 million is earmarked for club support in 2026 and 2027 as part of the eSPORTura25-35 initiative.
“There’s still much to achieve. Fuerteventura faces new challenges, but today we have more water, housing projects underway, improved waste management, and real investment in community-demanded projects,” concluded García.
