Femés is gearing up for one of its most anticipated events, the San Marcial del Rubicón festivities, celebrating the patron saint of both the village and Lanzarote. The Yaiza Council invites everyone to participate in a week of celebrations blending tradition, music, sport, and gastronomy, with activities designed for families and a tribute to the island’s history.
Kicking off officially on Sunday, June 28, at 7:00 PM in the San Marcial church, the opening ceremony will feature a speech by Julian Cáceres Hernández, a local figure deeply connected to the celebrations. Known for his famed chickpea and goat stew, he embodies the spirit of community involvement in local cultural activities. His address promises to be a heartfelt recollection of shared memories with the residents.
Following the ceremony, the Arife music group will perform at 8:00 PM, showcasing a unique musical style that merges Amazigh (Berber) culture with Canarian and North African traditions through instruments like the timple and bucio.
The festivities will run throughout the week, offering various activities for all ages, including cooking contests, workshops, and musical performances. Highlights include the return of the Transajaches sports event on Saturday, July 4, and performances by renowned artist Pepe Benavente on July 2, and a lively youth night with Mambo Latino and Javi Fajardo on July 3. The traditional Fiesta de la Pamela will feature Bourbon, Defecto Venturi, and a tribute to Fito & Fitipaldis, promising one of the week’s most vibrant nights.
On July 7, the main day of the celebrations, Femés will commemorate San Marcial with a solemn service and procession led by the Municipal Band, attended by locals, officials, and visitors from across the island.
The day will conclude with the XVIII Solistas Encounter at 9:00 PM, presenting the show “Herederos,” featuring talents like Iván Quintana and Ciro Corujo.
Yaiza’s mayor, Óscar Noda, expressed gratitude for the support from the Lanzarote Cabildo and encouraged residents from all municipalities to join in what he described as a celebration of identity, history, and joy. Festival councillor Daniel Medina added that the diverse programme is designed to appeal to everyone, celebrating local traditions while offering activities for all ages.
