Betancuria to Approve New Emergency Plan
Betancuria will soon approve its Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU), following a productive meeting between Lolina Negrín, the Security and Emergencies Councillor for Fuerteventura, and local officials. The meeting, attended by Mayor Enrique Cerdeña Méndez, focused on finalising this vital document.
They reviewed the current status of the technical drafting and discussed the administrative steps needed for its approval. The final submission will be sent to the Canary Islands’ Autonomous Commission for Civil Protection and Emergency Response for final approval. This makes Betancuria the first municipality in Fuerteventura with a population under 20,000 to approve a PEMU.
Mayor Cerdeña highlighted the plan’s significance for local safety, stating, “For a municipality with the geographic and heritage characteristics of Betancuria, having an updated PEMU is not just a formality; it’s a vital necessity. This document will enable us to respond quickly and effectively, fully coordinated with the Cabildo and the Canary Government in any risk situation.”
He also expressed gratitude for the support from the insular corporation, noting, “Collaboration with Councillor Lolina Negrín is essential in providing our residents with a modern civil protection tool that Betancuria deserves.”
The PEMU is crucial for coordinating risk management and response at the local level. It will be integrated into the Territorial Civil Protection Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands (PLATECA), ensuring a joint response from municipal, insular, and autonomous resources. This initiative will enhance safety and the civil protection system in Betancuria.
