First Conference on Terrorism Held in the Canary Islands
The Victims of Terrorism Association (AVT) and the Official College of Psychologists of Las Palmas hosted the first conference on terrorism in the Canary Islands on June 19th. The event, held at the Fernando Pessoa University of the Canary Islands, aimed to bring together professionals, students, and the public to discuss the historical, social, legal, and human impacts of terrorism.
The conference addressed various aspects of terrorism, examining its evolution and the current challenges it poses both nationally and internationally. One of the standout moments included testimonies from terrorism victims, who shared their personal experiences, highlighting the profound effects on their lives and families. Their stories illustrated the importance of remembering victims and fostering a society committed to democratic values and coexistence.
Experts also discussed the historical context of terrorism in Spain and its transformation in other countries, enhancing attendees’ understanding of this complex issue. Legal professionals reviewed progress made in recognising and protecting victims but also pointed out ongoing challenges in ensuring comprehensive support and reparations for those affected.
This inaugural event aimed to promote knowledge and collective reflection on the consequences of terrorism, emphasising memory, prevention, and social commitment as vital tools for building a more aware and resilient society against violence and radicalisation.
Both the AVT and the College of Psychologists expressed satisfaction with the successful launch of this initiative, creating a valuable platform for dialogue and education on a critical aspect of recent history in Spain.
