Puerto del Rosario’s council unveiled its new Commerce Trails on Tuesday, aiming to blend heritage, culture, tourism, and local trade to invigorate the city centre for both residents and visitors.

The launch event was held at the Casa-Museum of Miguel de Unamuno, showcasing the Miguel de Unamuno Route, which commemorates the writer’s impact during his time in Fuerteventura, alongside the Sculptural Route, highlighting key artwork that beautifies the streets of Puerto del Rosario.

Attendees included Mayor David De Vera Cabrera, local commerce councillor Tacoremi Gutierrez, president of the Merchants Association Daniela Plotegher, and Borja Palmer from Laureon, the company responsible for the project’s technical design and development.

Mayor De Vera emphasised that these routes go beyond simple urban signage, offering a fresh way to explore the city by linking its historical and cultural heritage with support for local businesses. He noted that this initiative is backed by co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Canarias Intelligent Commercial Destination programme, illustrating how European funds can bring real benefits to local communities and businesses.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the technical services and the Merchants Association, encouraging locals and visitors to explore both routes and engage with the local commercial offerings while learning about the town’s history.

Gutierrez expressed her delight at launching a project that the municipal department has been developing for months. She explained that the routes are designed as tourist and cultural attractions while serving as a promotional tool for participating businesses.

Each participating establishment features an identifying sign with a QR code, allowing visitors to access information about the shop via their mobiles, integrating it into a digital trail. Distribution of these signs has already begun, with businesses awaiting theirs able to collect them soon at the council’s Commerce Department.

The municipal representative highlighted that the goal is for those following the Unamuno or Sculptural Routes to not only discover Puerto del Rosario’s heritage but to enter shops, learn about their offerings, and support local trade. She urged other businesses to join the initiative, which promises to increase their visibility.

During the event, Plotegher praised the collaboration between the council and local businesses, emphasising the need to promote innovative projects that support small commerce and revitalise the town’s streets.

Borja from Laureon demonstrated the technical aspects of the routes, showing how users can access historical, cultural, and commercial content via QR codes on their devices, thereby enhancing the experience for those visiting the city centre.

These new routes are part of a broader strategy for modernising and digitalising urban commerce, promoting a more innovative, accessible, and connected city where heritage, technology, and economic activity progress together.

Through this initiative, Puerto del Rosario reaffirms its commitment to local commerce, digital transformation, and the enhancement of the cultural identity of the municipality.
