Gabriel Megías Martínez, the Deputy Minister of Finance for the Canary Islands, has not disclosed his role on the boards of two companies: Pastas La Isleña and Inversiones y Gestiones Turísticas, S.A., which manages the Cordial hotel chain.
According to reports from Diario de Avisos and confirmed by Canarias Ahora, Megías is listed as a director of both the Gran Canaria-based Pastas La Isleña and the Tenerife chocolatier La Candelaria in the Official State Bulletin. Furthermore, meeting minutes from March 2026 indicate his involvement with Inversiones y Gestiones Turísticas, S.A.
These business ties have not been disclosed on the Government of the Canary Islands’ Transparency Portal, which only mentions his past role at Andrés Megías Mendoza, S.A. from October 1988 to October 1989 and lacks information on current compatibility.
The situation escalated when Megías signed a resolution in August mandating all hotels in the Canary Islands to pay the Import and Goods Delivery Tax (AIEM) on welcome chocolates and bonbons not produced locally, potentially benefiting La Isleña directly.
The PSOE party has demanded immediate clarification from the Canary Islands’ Popular Party and its president, Manuel Domínguez, regarding the potential conflict of interest involving the Deputy Minister. The socialists argue that these matters are serious enough for the government to provide swift explanations to eliminate any doubts about the actions of a senior official.
The newspaper has inquired with the Ministry of Finance on why Megías failed to report his business ties on the Transparency Portal but has yet to receive a response.
