Canary Islands Advance Plans for Railway Infrastructure
The Canary Island Government, alongside the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and the councils of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, held a meeting yesterday to establish oversight committees aimed at advancing railway infrastructure on both islands.
This session took place at the Government of the Canary Islands’ headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and marks significant progress in the agreement between local administrations to enhance transport systems in Tenerife and Gran Canaria through high-capacity guided transport.
Key attendees included Pablo Rodríguez, the regional Minister for Public Works, Housing and Mobility; María Fernández, Director-General of Transport and Mobility; and Sara Hernández, Secretary-General for Sustainable Mobility, among others.
“We’ve made an important step today,” stated María Fernández. “Although there’s still work ahead, we are closer than ever to fully defined, viable projects ready for implementation. This committee aims to complete the necessary technical and legal work to negotiate a multi-year funding agreement, which will provide financial stability for the projects and allow us to discuss timelines, execution, and launch.”
Sara Hernández noted that the involved administrations will work closely together to enhance mobility and address the islands’ needs.
Each project is at a different stage of development, with Gran Canaria announcing the approval of its environmental impact statement, while discussions regarding coordination with Aena are ongoing in Tenerife.
