The San Bartolomé Town Council has welcomed the Canary Islands Health Service’s decision to move forward with the construction of a new health centre in Playa Honda, although it opposes starting a new project from scratch.
Mayor Isidro Pérez expressed optimism about the Health Service re-evaluating the plot of land provided by the Council, which had previously faced scrutiny from the Health Department and Lanzarote Council. However, he cautioned that initiating a new project could unnecessarily delay the urgently needed facility. “Starting a new project would prolong timelines for an infrastructure that is highly demanded by the community,” he stated. The municipality has already ceded the land, has a technical project in place, and completed the necessary urban planning modifications for its execution.
Urban Planning Councillor Marlene Romero echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the Health Service’s acceptance of the plot’s suitability and emphasising that all required technical aspects and modifications have been finalised. The Council adds that funding is now needed to progress and urges the Health Department to utilise the existing technical work.
Pérez noted that Playa Honda has seen significant population growth, and the current health consultation services no longer meet the area’s needs. He highlighted a recent petition supporting the new health centre as a clear indication of community backing for the project.
The Town Council insists there are no municipal barriers to advancing the health centre’s construction and has called on the Health Service to clarify why a new project is deemed necessary, what changes would be made to the existing plans, and the expected financing and timelines for the new centre.
