Author Michael Ponzio releases his ninth historical fiction novel inspired by a visit to Lanzarote.
Following a visit to Lanzarote in 2025, historical fiction author Michael Ponzio has released his latest novel, The Fortunate Islands: A Novel of the 14th Century Canary Islands. The book explores the rich history of the Canary Islands while paying tribute to the Majos, the indigenous people of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Although the Majos no longer exist as a separate people, their legacy continues through the DNA, traditions, and cultural heritage of today’s residents of Lanzarote, known locally as conejeros. The novel highlights this often-overlooked chapter of the islands’ history through an exciting adventure set during the 14th century.
The story follows a Sicilian family that embarks on a merchant voyage across the Mediterranean and Atlantic, encountering danger, discovery, and unforgettable characters along the way. Esmeray, the daughter of a Greek fisherman, commands the ship alongside her husband Bastone, a skilled Genoese crossbowman, as they defend their crew against pirate attacks. Their daughter, Aspasia, begins the journey as the ship’s cabin boy before earning the crew’s respect as a capable sailor.
Their voyage eventually brings them to Lanzarote, where they discover that the Genoese explorer Lanzarotto Malocello has established a settlement on the island. The novel combines real historical figures and events with compelling fiction to create an immersive story of exploration, courage, and survival.
