Las Palmas City Council Unveils Plaza de la Abogacía to Honour Public Defenders
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has officially opened the Plaza de la Abogacía del Turno de Oficio, located next to the City of Justice. This new space recognises the vital role of public defenders in ensuring the right to legal defence and universal access to justice.
The inauguration was led by Mayor Carolina Darias, alongside notable figures such as Rafael Massieu Curbelo, Dean of the Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Las Palmas, and various city councillors.
This designation responds to a request by the local Bar Association, highlighting the indispensable work of public defenders who provide continuous legal assistance throughout the year. These professionals play a critical role, especially for vulnerable citizens requiring judicial support.
Mayor Darias emphasised that naming a public space serves to embed essential values into the city’s collective memory. She stated, “The city incorporates into its living memory an essential role for justice, equality, and effective defence of rights.”
She praised the chosen location, situated in the heart of Vegueta beside the City of Justice, as ideal for recognising the efforts of those who make justice accessible to all residents.
Darias also acknowledged the commitment of public defenders, who work “365 days a year, 24 hours a day” in courts, police stations, and emergency services. Their contributions often go unrecognised, yet they are crucial for ensuring equality before the law.
In his remarks, Massieu expressed gratitude towards the City Council for establishing the new plaza. He noted it underscores the importance of a service that upholds the right to defence and equality under the law.
He reminded attendees that public defenders are available around the clock, providing essential legal support regardless of individuals’ financial circumstances. Massieu concluded by underlining that this recognition reflects society’s commitment to ensuring universal access to justice for all citizens, irrespective of their resources.
