New Funding Agreement for Fuerteventura
Lola García, president of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, announced a new funding agreement aimed at addressing key local issues like housing and social care. This announcement came during a conference today focused on the updated Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) for 2026-2036, which is expected to total €1.626 billion.
García highlighted the significance of the FDCAN in enhancing public investment across the Canary Islands, noting that over €200 million has previously been allocated to essential infrastructure and services in Fuerteventura, including water supply, roads, and employment policies.
She mentioned the importance of adapting the FDCAN to reflect the realities of each island, stating, “Today’s agreement is crucial not just for renewing the FDCAN, but also for updating it based on feedback from the Cabildos.”
The Fuerteventura Cabildo has advocated for prioritising areas like housing improvement and social health resources, essential for meeting the island’s current needs. García also pointed out that Fuerteventura benefits from an 80% funding percentage, exceeding that of the capital islands, recognising the challenges of double insularity.
The flexibility of the FDCAN has been enhanced, with reduced bureaucratic hurdles and easier investment reprogramming, which García believes will greatly benefit Fuerteventura in future funding agreements. She expressed gratitude to Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, for his role in making these improvements.
García concluded by stating that these changes would enable better resource utilisation and a quicker response to citizens’ needs.
