The Tenants’ Union of Tenerife has raised alarm over a 54-year-old woman from Granadilla de Abona, who faces eviction on Friday, 25 September, while battling terminal cancer and undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
The eviction is set for 10:00 AM as part of a case for non-payment initiated in the Granadilla de Abona Court, according to the union.
Currently, the woman relies on public assistance, lacks a steady income, and is classified as having a grade II dependency. This situation makes it challenging for her to secure alternative rental housing.
The union claims the woman has metastasised cancer affecting her brain and is receiving chemotherapy. However, these details about her health have not been officially substantiated with medical documentation.
In response to the forthcoming eviction, the union has called on the Canary Islands Government and Granadilla de Abona Town Hall to intervene to prevent or delay the eviction and ensure a housing alternative is available.
“The alternative cannot be the street,” the union stated in a message released on Wednesday.
They urge social and housing services from various authorities to work together before Friday, making sure any support provided is suitable for her financial and personal circumstances.
The union added that the woman’s ability to pay rent declined following the pandemic due to economic hardships, and she struggles to rent a room because she cannot provide proof of income or an employment contract.
