The Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services, and Navigation of Fuerteventura has acknowledged the commitment of the Port Authority of Las Palmas to the development of Puerto del Rosario. However, it insists on a thorough review of the 2027 Business Plan to uncover the island’s actual investment efforts.

After reviewing the plan, the Chamber noted that a significant portion of the projected investment consists of initiatives outlined in previous Business Plans that remain unfulfilled. This includes €2 million allocated for improvements to facilitate a maritime link between Puerto del Rosario and Tarfaya—a key move for Fuerteventura’s economic diversification that has appeared in budgets for years without any actual progress.

The plan also includes a proposed expansion of the commercial dock by 250 metres, crucial for increasing the port’s operational capacity and competitiveness. This, too, has been part of past planning without execution.

To gain a clear understanding of Fuerteventura’s new investment for 2027, the Chamber emphasised the need to distinguish between genuinely new projects and those that have been repeatedly included without completion.

One notable development in the 2027 plan is the introduction of an electrical connection for Puerto del Rosario, which is expected to modernise port facilities and improve energy efficiency, aligning with decarbonisation goals.

Juan Jesús Rodríguez Marichal, President of the Chamber of Commerce, stated, “Planning is important, but the true measure of commitment to the island is effective investment execution. Fuerteventura needs completed projects, not repetitive proposals that remain unrealised year after year.”

The Chamber recommends that future Business Plans include a specific section clearly identifying new investments, reprogrammed actions from previous years, and the status of existing commitments.

Additionally, the Chamber is preparing a comparative report on the successive Business Plans of the Port Authority of Las Palmas to assess the proposed investments for Puerto del Rosario, their execution status, and timelines for strategic project delivery.

Rodríguez Marichal concluded that “transparency in planning and the effective fulfilment of commitments are the best guarantees for fostering trust among institutions, businesses, and the public. Fuerteventura needs clear information about which investments are truly new, which remain pending, and when projects will be realised. Only with accurate data can we assess the genuine commitment to the island and advance the development of port infrastructure that meets current and future needs.”
