Lanzarote Calls for Increased Taxi Licences Amid Tourism Surge
The Lanzarote Cabildo, through SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, has urged local councils to implement monthly taxi licences to meet rising tourist demand without compromising services for residents.
Officials have noted significant wait times for taxis, particularly at peak periods in busy tourist areas, generating frustration among both locals and visitors. Long queues have recently been reported at Marina Rubicón in Playa Blanca, illustrating the growing pressure on transport services.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort acknowledged the efforts of the taxi sector in managing high demand, but stressed the necessity for local administrations to take action. He emphasised that councils have options to temporarily boost service capacity during busy periods and called for immediate consideration of these measures over the summer.
Héctor Fernández, Executive Councillor of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, highlighted that effective mobility enhances the tourist experience. Prolonged waits can negatively impact visitors’ perception of Lanzarote and also affect residents’ daily lives.
The Cabildo has requested local authorities to explore ways to improve service delivery during high season, including the introduction of temporary monthly licences to allow for the addition of vehicles and drivers when needed, without permanently changing the number of local licences.
These measures are seen as a quick and effective response to seasonal demand, particularly in areas with high visitor concentrations. The Cabildo also proposed optimising available resources and improving coordination to enhance taxi services.
The local governing body reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with municipal administrations and the taxi sector to address current transport needs while maintaining the quality of the tourist destination.
