Experts from various fields are meeting this week in Güímar, Tenerife, to discuss cultural heritage at the XXIV Symposium on Historical Centres and Heritage of the Canary Islands. Organised by the International Centre for the Conservation of Heritage (CICOP) and the Güímar Town Council, the symposium focuses on the conservation, interpretation, and management of cultural heritage in relation to local landscapes.
Kicking off on Thursday, 24 October, at 10 am at the Ethnographic Park and Botanical Garden, the event will be inaugurated by Güímar’s mayor Carmen Luisa Castro, along with other officials, including CICOP’s president Francisco Aznar Vallejo.
The keynote address will be delivered by Dr Susana Goulart Costa, a history professor from the University of the Azores. She will discuss the transformation of heritage from mere objects to integral aspects of territorial intelligence.
Afternoon sessions will explore ‘Towards a Pedagogy of Heritage and Landscape’, featuring talks from various academics including Dr Fernando Sabaté, who will focus on heritage trails as collective knowledge tools, and Leonor María Inda, who will address collaborative governance in heritage.
On Friday, 25 October, discussions will shift to ‘Intangible Heritage and Living Memory in Island Territories.’ Notable speakers include Ramiro Rosón from Carlos III University of Madrid and Carlos Castro Brunetto from the University of La Laguna.
The final day, Saturday, 26 October, will see the closure of the symposium at 11:30 am, alongside the CICOP Awards and the launch of the Güímar medianías manifesto. All events are open to the public, but prior registration is required for attendance certification.
CICOP is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection and management of cultural and natural heritage, actively promoting research and community involvement in heritage projects both in Spain and internationally from its base in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
