Lanzarote will experience a significant rise in temperatures and dusty conditions on Monday, 14 September, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). Yellow alerts for high temperatures and suspended dust have been issued, which will also affect Fuerteventura.
The heat warning will be in effect from 11:00 to 19:00. Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 34 degrees, with a probability of this occurring between 40% and 70%. The interior areas of the island will be particularly affected.
Weather forecasts indicate a slight to moderate rise in maximum temperatures, while minimum temperatures will remain stable. On Sunday, certain inland areas of Lanzarote may already reach around 30 degrees.
Regarding the dust, the alert will begin at midnight on Monday and last until midnight on Tuesday. AEMET predicts a similar 40% to 70% chance of dust, warning of high concentration levels at ground level. Visibility may drop below 1,000 metres, especially in interior regions where dust particles are expected to be most concentrated. Dust will be widespread across Lanzarote and La Graciosa for much of the day.
Additionally, air quality is expected to worsen due to the dust, particularly in lower areas of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with particle levels possibly exceeding 100 micrograms per cubic metre from Monday morning.
Winds will be moderate from the north but will ease, giving way to breezier conditions after midday. Currently, the yellow heat alert is specific to Monday, while the dust episode will continue into Tuesday, pending any updates to the weather forecast.
