An exhibition aimed at raising awareness about the threats to the flora of Gran Canaria has begun its tour in Artenara. Launched by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Viera and Clavijo Botanical Garden, the “Know to Conserve” campaign will travel to seven municipalities from September to December.
The exhibition will visit Gáldar, Agaete, Agüimes, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Ingenio, and Mogán. It aims to educate the public on scientific and technical efforts under the Endangered Species Conservation Programme, coordinated by the Botanical Garden, to protect and ensure the survival of the island’s flora.
A statement from the Cabildo noted that the initiative seeks to engage citizens in caring for threatened species, helping them understand the spaces these species inhabit, their fragility, and encouraging them to adopt practices that mitigate biodiversity threats.
Key goals of the campaign include promoting the ecological value of protected species, raising awareness of the dangers impacting their conservation status, and encouraging environmental best practices. The initiative will also showcase the Botanical Garden’s efforts, which include monitoring populations, seed conservation, and plant production.
The exhibition features talks and guided tours of various Protected Natural Spaces, allowing the public to learn about key species and their habitats, as well as the fragility of the island’s ecosystems and ongoing conservation efforts.
The tour will commence in Artenara, a site recognised for its rich natural heritage, which includes the Rural Park of Nublo, the Las Cumbres Protected Landscape, and the Tamadaba Natural Park, home to numerous endemic species.
As part of the “Know to Conserve” campaign, a free public talk will take place on Thursday, 17 September, at the Cultural Centre in Artenara, followed by a guided tour of Tamadaba on Saturday, 19 September, to explore its rich biodiversity, including species such as Guayedra’s magarza and the Tamadaba waxbill.
